3-Year Grant Opportunity
New for 2022!
The Spectacle Makers’ Charity (Registered Charity No. 1186122) invites applications for a 3-year grant with a total value of up to £30,000.
One or two grants may be awarded, depending on the number and quality of applications received.
The intention is to support new projects or improvements in service delivery which will have a direct benefit to eye health or to the health and wellbeing of people with impaired vision or sight loss. Applications can be submitted up to 28 February 2022 and funding for the charity or charities selected will commence by September 2022.
How does the 3-year funding work?
Applicants must provide a detailed and fully costed plan at the outset and deliver regular reports against the initial budget. We’ll hope to get to know you well through those regular reports and build a good working relationship.
Continuation of funding will be reviewed annually, taking account of the reports received and feedback from beneficiaries. Please note though that the Trustees reserve the right to cease funding at any time if they are not satisfied with progress or feel for any reason that the original aims of the project are not likely to be met.
Am I eligible for a 3-year grant?
This scheme is open to:
• registered UK charities and sporting, leisure or cultural organisations who can demonstrate an intention to deliver a meaningful positive impact on the lives of vision-impaired people
• UK-registered charities working in low-income areas of the world or where there is inadequate access to vision care
• educational institutions in the UK teaching and researching in eye health
The Charity will not consider:
• grants which do not relate directly to vision or sight loss
• individual applications for hardship grants
• more general disaster/emergency appeals
• individual research projects which do not fall within the supervision of a UK educational institution or charity
• requests requiring direct transfer of funds outside the UK
Applicants should note that the Trustees are looking to fund initiatives which will have substantial impact at a national or international level, whether directly or through the sharing of knowledge gained from the work. The Trustees will expect applications to demonstrate an intention to become self-funding or prove a case for further investment by other organisations after the end of the grant period. There is no intention for the Trustees to continue funding after the end of the 3-year period.
How to apply
Applications can only be accepted by completing the online form below. You will receive an electronic confirmation of receipt.
Please apply as soon as you can to give the maximum time for us to consider all the details of your proposal. The closing date for online applications is midnight on 28 February 2022.
Once your initial application has been lodged, you may be asked to provide additional information such as financial statements, if annual accounts are not already available via the Charity Commission or other sources of public record. Depending on the nature of your application, the Trustees may also ask to see your policies on safeguarding, equality and inclusion, and/or Bribery Act compliance.
Applicants who go forward to the second stage of the process will be contacted individually by a Trustee before the end of March 2022. If you have not received a callback by 31 March 2022, we are sorry but that means your application will not go any further. Sadly, we will not be able to give detailed feedback in such a case.
In Stage 2, “long list” applicants will be asked to provide their latest management accounts and cash flow and reserves forecasts, and may be asked for more detailed information relating to the staffing and operational management of the project.
Finally, a shortlist of applicants will be invited to an interview to present their case for support. Interview dates will be in the first two weeks of May. A final decision will be made by the end of May 2022 with funding commencing by September 2022.
In order to treat all applicants fairly, we are sorry but neither any of the Trustees nor our office support team will be able to provide individual guidance or advice on a potential application. If you have a specific query about eligibility or you have technical problems completing the form, please email email@example.com.
