The course is aimed at any qualified dispensing optician that has attained FBDO, who want to increase their understanding of the manufacturing industry and broaden their skills and experience. The Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians is regarded by many as the ‘Gold Standard’ for the industry. Holders of the qualification are entitled to use the letters SMC (Tech) after their name. It is tailored to the needs of those who aspire to become senior technicians and supervisors.
The course covers the elements of glazing and the technician’s role that is not already covered in the FBDO qualification. There is a workshop on how to glaze, however, for experienced glazers there is no requirement to attend the workshop. The distance learning element of the course, delivered by ABDO College, has been accredited with 7 CET points. In addition, those who attend the glazing workshop will be awarded a further 6 CET points.
FBDO’s are exempt from the first year of the course and half of the second year, but are still required to undertake a written examination along with a practical examination which includes a glazing project to be completed in the work place.
