SAMŽ Contact Lens Technology

The Cambridge-based technology company CLPL invented and patented SAMŽ (Spherical Aberration Management) technology to improve the power control and inherent quality of all contact lenses, regardless of material or manufacturing method employed. The resultant lenses are accurate to the prescribed power over far more of their area than conventional lenses. There are major benefits for the wearer, the practitioner and the manufacturer

SAMŽ is compatible with the very latest, and future, developments. SAMŽ accepts and calculates input from advancing areas such as wave front technology. The manipulation of such input data is employed for creating both bespoke and mass-market lenses.

In addition to sub-micron accuracy, SAMŽ allows for considerations such as the whole lens eye system, including drape of the lens on eye and non-isotropic material expansion factors. It also optimises manufacturing efficiency by taking into account the machining capabilities of the manufacturing processes used. The system is tailored to increase calculation orders as new generation manufacturing capabilities, with tighter tolerances, are developed.

For the patient, many of the benefits of SAMŽ are clear: the lenses are clinically superior and offer greater definition and visual acuity. Flaring is reduced or eliminated, being particularly apparent to the wearer in low-light conditions. The technology manages inherent aberrations and controls actual power at all point of the lens on single-vision, multifocal and toric lenses. It also allows the lenses to be manufactured thinner, for increased health and oxygen permeability, without loss of visual acuity, strength or rigidity.

For the practitioner, in addition to prescribing a superior lens at no additional cost, there is a significant saving in chair time. The system facilitates fitting, brings unparalleled confidence in replacement lenses and minimises initial over refractions.

For the manufacturer, SAMŽ offers cost savings through increased reproducibility, reduction of rejects and the automation of final checking and quality control. The whole system can be put live into an existing production facility with a one-off set-up time of just a few hours. In addition, there are the marketing benefits of offering a more advanced product.
