What's in it for me?

The SMC's Level 4 Certificate for Optical Technicians, (SMC Tech), is a nationally accredited qualification and is recognised by all optical industry employers as a mark of excellence for your chosen career. Undertaking this course and qualification is a clear demonstration of your commitment to enhance your skills and expertise to the highest level.

Holders of this certificate are granted the post-nominal qualification 'SMC Tech' and are entitled as of right to be made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. They are able to claim exemption from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians' normal entry requirements progressing to the second year to train as a Dispensing Optician, subject only to a theoretical examination and 15 minute practical.

Where do I start?

It is a two year course which places emphasis on the technology and physics of spectacle manufacture, and is tailored to the needs of those who aspire to become Senior Technicians and Supervisors. The course is divided into two parts with exams at the end of each year with resits permissible. Ideally you should have a background of working in optical manufacturing and, although you do not need any formal academic qualifications, knowledge of maths to GCSE level would be a distinct advantage. Courses commence in September and February each year.

Text Books

The course manual is designed to provide students with sufficient knowledge which, when combined with experience gained in the workplace, should enable them to secure the minimum pass mark in the examination. However, in preparing themselves to sit for this Level 4 qualification, and so proving themselves to be potential production supervisors and managers, students are expected to read in depth into the subjects covered.
