APPRENTICESHIPS
FOR
OPTICAL MANUFACTURING TECHNICIANS
AND
OPTICAL ASSISTANTS AND PRACTICE SUPPORT STAFF

The Learning & Skills Council (LSC), together with the Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Alliance (SEMTA) and the Optical Industry, have agreed frameworks for Modern Apprenticeships for Optical Manufacturing Technicians and Optical Assistants/Practice Support Staff.

The Apprenticeship Framework will require employees to undertake an NVQ (Competence in the workplace), a written examination (Underpinning knowledge) and three Level 1 Key Skills. There are two alternative journeys to achieve an Apprenticeship.

Journey 1
for
Manufacturing Technicians

Level 2 NVQ in Optical Manufacturing

Level 2 Certificate in Optical Production Processes

Three Level 1 Key Skills in

Communications

Working with others

Application of number

Journey 2
for
Assistants and Practice Support Staff

Level 2 NVQ in Optical Retailing

Level 2 Certificate in Optical Practice Support

Three Level 1 Key Skills in

Communications

Working with others

Application of number

Substantial government funding support is expected to be available, as with other Apprenticeships in England and Wales.
